Created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first appearance of Tarzan was in the novel Tarzan of the Apes, first as a magazine publication in 1912 then as a book two years later. There soon followed a number of sequels initially by Burroughs then other authors.

John Clayton II, Viscount Greystoke, is the full name of Tarzan, a young boy raised in the African jungle by great apes, he is brought back to civilisation, only to find he cannot fit in.

There have been many depictions of the hero over the years from the action movies staring Johnny Weissmuller and others to comics, animated tv series, and Disney's own take on the legend.
